What is that thing called that people will put on the top of the neck of the guitar while they are playing? It looks like a chrome bar that covers the first fret. What is it for? I have nothing better to do than ask dumb questions while my fingers heal up from throbbing and blisters - hee hee. :p

It's called a capo. It's so you can play a G shape or C shape chord easier than trying to bar among other things.
