does anyone think that it is better to not anchor your pinky or other fingers on the guitar body while picking? i used to do this all the time, but then changed to just curling my fingers up while playing because i was told that it will help with speed. is this true? because i've seen some of the fastest guitar players (malmsteen, satriani, hammett, vai, batio) anchoring their pinky down as a sort of pivot point. what do you guys think?

depends on what you play, sometimes anchoring your pinky helps, sometimes it's easier without, figure out your own style

Do what feels better. Try both ways and see which you prefer.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

well, i use both of them. i play neo-classical stuf, and when i'm on some long, fast runs, i like to anchor down the pinky. i guess that's what i prefer, it's just that i tend to prefer speed over comfort. i've been told that anchoring you pinky slows you down.

Like most techniques, it depends on what you're used to. John Petrucci doesn't always anchor his pinky, and he is ludicrously fast.
