sort of both, i think. because of how they are set up on the fretboard, they are very easy to remember and improv on, thats why they are really popular with beginners. more talented players usually experiment more, branching out into other scales, getting their own sound.

another reason pentatonic scales are popular is because of their versitility. theres a whole lot you can do with it, because of both its location and its spacing. it has a characteristic "rock" sound.

thats my two cents.

Pentatonic scales are so popular because the pattern is very easy to remember and many beginners start with it. Also Pentatonic is very versatile and is used a LOT in Rock music. Peace.

I guess one of the reasons there so popular is because pentatonics have roots in old bluesy sounds...as rock evolved many blues greats still incorparated it into classic rock sounds like hendrix...zeppelin...cream....everything goes back to the roots.

This scale will harmonise over A major - Dmajor - E major or A minor D minor E minor or A5, D5, E5.

If you can find an A blues/rock Song -AC/DC are good - try playing these notes in different orders - eventually you will notice patterns on the neck - keep at it and try some bends and vibrato and eventually you find some ' Licks of your own '

Pentatonics are described as ' Dark Scales ', I think it's the gaps between all the notes - brilliant for Rock and Pop

Some would say that you're already half way to doing it right. The other half involves composing a melody based on these fingerings. When improvising around a scale, the idea is to play notes from the scale in a manner that suits the rhythm, tone, tempo etc. of the music you're improvising over. Thus, when you improvise, you supplement the structures that you're spontaneously creating, with any pre-practised structures appropriate to the style of music you're playing (eg. jazz licks if you're playing jazz, blues licks if you're playing blues etc).

...Okay, reading that again, very little of it made sense :o - but hopefully, you get the general idea!

the reason is, like previously mentioned, blues players used it so the blues influenced rock players incorporated that into their music. But I think people need to use more than just one scale, gets reeeeaallly boring. you have to work in some major (other modes), Harmonic minor (yngwies stereotypical scale), and throw in something,"out there". like the Persian scale, cool east indian sounding (thats one of my personal favs to improvise and mess around in!).

Pentatonic scales are popular as the patterns are easy to remember. They are widely used because their construction means they fit over pretty much any chord without clashing.

As previously stated, I think you HAVE to elaborate on them a bit or pretty much everything you do is a cliche.... They are cool when you're playing drunk though... :D

Pentatonic scales are made from the most consonant pitches of a key. It is a lot easier to sound good with a pentatonic scales than it is with a minor scale. The notes match easier and more frequently than other scales.
