So there I was, sittin' at the computer, jammin' out a slow little diddy at 96 bpm, watchin' Miami Ink with the closed captioning on, then it was gone... No explosion, no puff of smoke, it just turned itself off as though I had hit the power button. I'm bummin' as I had tonight's episode of Dirty Jobs DVR'd and now I'll have to wait.

So I bought this 27" Emerson TV from Wal-Mart less than a year ago and I still have the receipt. I checked their return policy online and it only says 90-Days. I have a feeling I'm screwed, and I've been trying to save up money for a new axe. This sucks.

Has anyone else had a new(ish) TV blow up on them before? What'd you do? I'm gonna call Wal-Mart tomorrow and see what they say, hopefully I can just nab a new one off the shelves (but when do things work out like that?) Should I try a TV repair place in town? Any help would be appreciated, I'm getting separation anxiety as we speak. Didn't appliances use to last a good decade or so?

I don't promote the following in any way.

You could buy another one just like it at Wal Mart then put the old one in the new box and return it. Just be sure to swap the serial number stickers if there are any so they match up to the serial number stickers on the box, if there are any. As long as you have your new reciept, they will give you back your cash and you will have a new TV. Not that I've ever done anything like that.

Emerson?
Sorry man, but that's kinda like buying a Pyramid car amp or a Lloyds stereo.
Get a real TV, like a Sony or something.
The picture quality is 100% better and you won't have to buy a new one every couple of years. Plus you'll get a years warranty of on-site service.

I realize that you get what you pay for, but dammit, I paid for it! I think I'll pull Buda's switch-a-roo. If the new one blows up too then I'll move on.

Just got off the phone with Balls-Mart. They said I'd have to go through the manufacturer. That could take weeks! I'm an American dammit, I don't have that kind of patience. They brought my wrath upon them.

My TV blinked out because I left it on for a week and a half straight. Some of these parts are easily and cheaply replaced by a friendly local small time tv repairman.

So while I was home on my lunch break I took my TV off its stand and found a phone number on the back. I called it up and navigated an automated menu until it started spitting out phone numbers of certified repair centers. The closest one is clear on the other side of Memphis. I called the number and asked about the warranty. 90 Day labor and 1 year parts. 1 year will be up in 11 days so I better figure out what the dump I'm gonna do. The chick at the repair store said they straight-up charge 24 bones just to look at the damn thing.

I might just buy a new TV after work and get this one repaired and then return the new one when my old one is fixed. If I can't find the exact same model that is :D

Well, I just got back from Balls-Mart. They didn't have the same exact model as mine anymore, but one that was soooo close. But the model number was different, even if it was the same however I just don't think I could go through with it. I'm going to take this as my $250 lesson to stay away from Wal-Mart and off-brands. Power to the people that rip that store off though, I just don't have it in me to be one of them.

You ever been thoroughly disgusted. I always forget what this feels like. I just looked at the dumpster rules here in the apartment and the TV is not dumpster compatible. Now I'm stuck with a 50lb paper weight.

I think I'll go to best buy tomorrow and get something with an extended warranty. I just hate these hassles soo much. What's are some good brands to go with?
