sometimes when i play, my fingers seem to drag. they seem slow and can only move so fast.

are there any warm ups excercises or something like that to limber up my fingers?
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

I posted this once before, but here goes . . .

E |-------------------------------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------------------------------|
G |--------------------------------------7-8-5-6-----5-6--|
D |----------------------7-8-5-6-----5-6---------7-8------|
A |------7-8-5-6-----5-6---------7-8----------------------|
E |--5-6---------7-8--------------------------------------|

E |------------------7-8-5-6-----8-7---------6-5----------|
B |--7-8-5-6-----5-6---------7-8-----6-5-8-7-----8-7------|
G |----------7-8-------------------------------------6-5--|
D |-------------------------------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------------------------------|
E |-------------------------------------------------------|

E |-------------------------------------------------------|
B |------6-5----------------------------------------------|
G |--8-7-----8-7---------6-5------------------------------|
D |--------------6-5-8-7-----8-7---------6-5--------------|
A |------------------------------6-5-8-7-----8-7----------|
E |----------------------------------------------6-5-8-7--|

E |--------|
B |--------|

Play this pattern all over the neck, not just at the fifth fret.

Ok, well I don't know if this is really a finger exercise, but it's cool nonetheless. Ascends through B phrygian and resolves to G.

E |-------------------------------------------------------------7-8----|
B |------------------------------------------------7-8---7-8-10-----10-|
G |-------------------------------------7-9----7-9-----9---------------|
D |-----------------------7-9----7-9-10-----10-------------------------|
A |---------7-9----7-9-10-----10---------------------------------------|
E |--7-8-10-----10-----------------------------------------------------|

E |--10-8-7------------------|
B |---------10-8-7-\-5-/-7-8-|
G |--------------------------|
D |--------------------------|
A |--------------------------|
E |--------------------------|

Once again, play this all over the place on the fretboard. You can use the same string-crossing pattern for descending too.

Also a good exercise is making vibrato.
Use a metronome, start at 80 and play. Slowly increase speed.
Quarter notes and triplets. Use all your fingers and different strings. It really helps you forward to phrasing.

Here's another one -

E |--24~--19-18-19--16-15-16--12-11-12-------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------------12-11-12---------------------|
G |-----------------------------------------------13-12-13-----------|
D |---------------------------------------------------------14-13-14-|
A |------------------------------------------------------------------|
E |------------------------------------------------------------------|

E |---------------------------19~--17-16-17--14-13-14------------|
B |----------------------------------------------------16-15-16--|
G |--------------------------------------------------------------|
D |--------------------------------------------------------------|
A |--14-13-14--11-10-11------------------------------------------|
E |----------------------12~-------------------------------------|

E |-------------------------------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------------------------------|
G |--16-15-16--14-13-14-----------------------------------|
D |----------------------16-15-16--13-12-13---------------|
A |------------------------------------------14-13-14ā€”9~--|
E |-------------------------------------------------------|

E |----------------------|
B |---------------9~~~---|
G |---------------11~~---|
D |---------------9~~~---|
A |------0-2-4-5ā€”-7~~~---|
E |--0-4-----------------|

This should be pretty difficult to start out just because of the way you have to jump strings and play notes with the same fingers.

The first arpeggio is an Edim. I'm not sure of the second one. And you can move them all over the place to practice.

BTW, if you don't have 24 frets, play the first E note on the second string 17th fret.

Ok, if nobody else wants to do this, then I'll start posting new warm-ups/licks in here regularly. I'll try to do it about once a week.

Skee1, yeah man, definitely post some stuff in here. Like I said, I need to learn too.

By the way, if you don't use the vbcode 'code' command, then nothing will line up and the tab will be indeciferable. There's a link at the bottom of the page that tells you how to use it.

Peace.

Weekly finger warm-up #1:

A
E |----------9-12-9----------------------------------------------|
B |--8/10-12--------12-10----------------------------------------|
G |-----------------------11-9-11-9----9-------------------------|
D |---------------------------------11---11-9-11-9---------9-11--|
A |------------------------------------------------12-9-12-------|
E |--------------------------------------------------------------|

B
E |-----------------------12-----------------11-14-11--------|
B |--------------------10----10~~~--10/12-14----------14-12--|
G |----------9----9-11---------------------------------------|
D |-----9-11---11--------------------------------------------|
A |--12------------------------------------------------------|
E |----------------------------------------------------------|
**

E |---------------------------------------------------------------|
B |---------------------------------------------------------------|
G |--13-11-13-11----11-------------------------------------11-----|
D |--------------13----13-11-13-11----------11-13----11-13----13--|
A |--------------------------------14-11-14-------14--------------|
E |---------------------------------------------------------------|

E |-----------14--------|
B |--------12----12~~~--|
G |--11-13--------------|
D |---------------------|
A |---------------------|
E |---------------------|
**

** denotes note held twice as long

When the counter-point notes are properly emphasized this should sound distinctly oriental. Try to play it as fluidly as possible while still picking every note, and remember to mute the strings a little with your palm or everything will bleed together.

Hey Skee, are those last six notes right? . . . so they're supposed to be played in succession, like 12, 2nd string, then 14, 1st string, etc . . . ?
