I'm working on a new composition and am having difficulties creating the beats required. I'm programming it into Cubase and have to set up the quantize and time signature... therein lies the problem.
The piece is played at 170 bpm on a steady stacatto rhythm, with phrasings of triplets between each click over eight bar segments...
eg: first 4 clicks of an 8 bar phrase
-----------------------------------------10-9--9-------------
---------15-14-13---------9-10-12----10----12-12-10-12-10-9
12-12-12---------10-10-10--------8-12-----------------------
What is the time signature????
Time signature Question

It's tough to tell where all the notes line up on that tab... If you want a triplet per beat with 4 beats per measure (which is what it sounds like you have) then it'd be in 12/8.

I say 6/8 6 beats per bar eighth note gets a beat.

Yeah, 6/8 for sure. I assume the stress comes on one and four. I mean, if this were 3/4 it just would sound gooftastic.

If the stress is coming one and four then wouldn't that essentially be the same as 3/4?

Well, in 6/8 time they'd be read as straight 8th notes, not triplets, so I was reading them that way. If they were triplets, yes, that would work with 3/4, but honestly I'd personally prefer 6/8, I don't particularly like long strings of triplets.

,,,,and it would be easier for the backing with the tempo he's going at.

Thanks guys, 3/4 was just doesnt sound right because of the tempo and volume of triplets, 6/8 works best for this particular track. Thanks again!

Oh, right... the whole triplet thing. I forgot about those things.

I did, however, say that 3/4 was gonna sound like peupty poop. Unless of course he changes those into quarter notes.
# 17
Surely in 3/4 the accents would be on the wrong notes? assuming that he intended the song to be played in 6/8?

Correct. Unless he changed the half notes in the example to quarter notes and increased the tempo of the piece. Then 3/4 would have the accents more or less on the right notes. Of course the accents on what would have been the "4" beat would be a tiny bit too heavy.

Play your composition as you normaly would and try speeding bpm several clicks above, or below the speed you have been using. I have found radical changes in bpm beyond what you here in your head can really change the sound, and ease of play for your composition. I mean Ive had songs I just found imposible to get rite, untill I tryed them in an extreemly higher, or lower bpm.
