Op-amp?
ok, i have seen this alot on a bunch of sites for guitar amps and distortion pedals. what is an op-amp? just curious.

The op-amp is basically a differential amplifier having a large voltage gain, very high input impedance and low output impedance. The op-amp has a "inverting" or (-) input and "noninverting" or (+) input and a single output. The op-amp is usually powered by a dual polarity power supply in the range of +/- 5 volts to +/- 15 volts.
... and if you understand what that means.. all the power to ya.

Op-amp is short for operational amplifier, a type of circuit having most of the characteristics that schmange described. The original design dates back to the 30's.
These days, it's almost always an integrated circuit (an IC) in a chip package. For guitar players, they get used in most effect pedals and in the preamp stages of transistor amplifiers.
