If you are literaly JUST starting to play...as in you have just picked up the guitar, just take a while in the beggining to get th "feel" of things. Practice your right hand excercises or just playing single notes with your left to find out what feels the most comfortable. Eventually prgoress into the basic 1234 1234 type excercises and once you feel comfortable playing the guitar do what povi33 said.

Learn to quickly switch between 2 open chords and repeat this. It really gave me a step up in learning other chords.

When i first started, I just learned tabs of easy songs, and then progressively moved to harder songs as I got better. It doesnt help you with knowing notes or scales, but it definitely helped me get a feel for things, and you will learn knew things with every song you learn.

The first thing to get down is the principles of guitar. try http://www.guitarprinciples.com ! Oh please GOD, go there, I just found the site the other day ( after a year or more playing, Can't remember great ) and it shocked me to learn that I was doing literally EVERYTHING wrong. I was sitting wrong, my left hand technique needed quite a bit of work, I pretty much had to start over on my right-hand technique, there is a book to buy ( best $28 bucks you'll ever spend ) but my playing improved unbelievable just from what was on the site. No more strings ringing during solos! I'm psyched about this site, check it out, or you'll wind up like me; I'm having to UNDO all my previous muscle memory from skipping these basics a year ago and jumping right into my favorite tunes and learning theory. This site will teach you how to practice, without that, any hope of becoming a skilled guitarists is dead.
