Need help with argument about fender strats

I'm writing this to help solve a dispute Im having with one of my friends who also plays guitar. My big question is, What type of music is a fender strat used for?
This is probally really stupid, because I own a fender, and I didnt know how to answer him when he told me this. I usually use my strat for some blues, rock, and hard rock. He tells me that I shouldnt be using a strat for hard rock becuase it sounds like crap.
I just want to know what a strat can be used for. Like if I were to start a band and we played rock, if I could use my strat, or if its not a rock guitar. Please Help!!!

ok, hard rock, im sorry to say, is gibson territory. i use my strat for punk, and pop/rock, like blink-182 or greenday. jazz is also good for a strat. and if you want, a strat can still be used for hard rock, strats are very very versatile

You can use a strat for any style of music. And please dont kill the name of fender by playing green day on it! I use a strat for blues, rock, jazz, hard rock (ac/dc, heavier led zeppelin, van halen). if you have the right amp, hard rock sounds just come right out. I'm assuming your using the standard 3-coil strat. If you had humbuckers this thread would be kinda pointless.
It does not sound like crap on hard rock! if you play modern "hard rock" ( anybody after the year 2000) then yes, it will most likely sound bad, but the music is bad anyway so it would'nt matter :D

Yep - one of the strangest, but most eye opening experince, for me was seeing one of the guitarist in Taproot playing with a strat. At the time I was amazed you could get that sound out of a strat, but I since learnt it's not so uncommon.

You'll find strats being used in almost every style you can think of - so (imho) the answer is anything and everything you can think of...

with the right gear and right effects....


strats are extremely versitile, thats why you see them everywhere... but i kind of agree with your bud about the metal thing... unless its a HSH or SSH set up. but the amps important too....

I do have a fat strat. Is that a bad thing, because I like the sound of the strat with the humbucker. Is it a bad thing to have a humbucker or not. Cuz I do play a lot of ac/dc and van halen and it sounds fine. So please tell me what is wrong with humbuckers, or if its fine to have.

Don't misunderstand me! there's nothing wrong with having humbuckers! Actually i think that makes your strat more versatile. I was just saying i could understand your friend not being able to understand a normal strat being able to play heavier, harder music. But since you have a humbucker you can easily play hard rock through metal with no problem at all! Your friend is largely mistaken!

A Strat can handle any music that requires an electric guitar. It's as simple as that.
Anyone who claims otherwise either A) doesn't have a mind of his own or B) has no clue what he's talking about.

bluesman,listen, i dont exactly know what you mean by"dont kill the name of fender by playing greenday",if your refering to them using gibsons, singer/guitar, and backup guitar, i understand your point. but first i would barely ever touch any other electric asides from a fender, look at my name...but you can't say greenday only uses gibson. the bassist uses a persicion bass, and before 2002?or 03 the lead guitarist used a white strat.

Im not saying they only use gibson, im saying I dont like them :D

ok... you seem to be very confused... there are no set "rules" that say you can't use a fender for hard rock or metal! in the same way you can use a gibson for playing soft stuff... yes certain guitars have strengths and weaknesses, but it doesn't mean you aren't "allowed" to play metal with a fender... let your own ears be the judge... did you think that playing hard rock with a fender sounded like crap before your friend said anything? probably not... so don't worry about what he says, you can use whatever guitar you want to for playing whatever style you want to. but some have strengths and weaknesses, and you may find a gibson to be better at hard rock, but it doesn't mean you can't play it with a strat.

You can use any guitar for any kind of music you want pretty much. It's all preference.

"fenderalltheway"...Billie Joe actually never owned a Fender. He used a Baby Blue Fernandes Strat Copy with an aftermarket humbucker in the bridge position which is the only position he uses. And he still uses that Blue Strat.

Fair enough. However, live he only uses "blue" among some gibsons, and on Dookie and Insomniac he only used "blue". Among his main guitars, the Junior and Fernandes Strat are up front.
