hey, so, I have a question I'm looking at getting this baby but, she doesn't come with paint, I want to know what the essentials are to painting a guitar, how expensive it would be, and how to do it (I want it to be pretty thin, and the wood grains to still show through) also, do you think I could do it by myself, with no experience in painting before? if not, then I could get my friend, who owns an airbrush, and has very limited experience, paint it for me.

dude. thats a sweet deal right there. believe i may buy one.
but you know whats cool? just throw random paint on it. like all over the place. so its just a random, cool effect. then get a gloss over that. i cant help you with that, but i know you need one over the paint.

I'm wondering... how terrible would it look if I just spray painted it? maybe with some gloss over top of that...

I would go with the airbrush myself. I have tried spray painting stuff like the gas tank on an old Honda motorcycle and find that alot of spray cans don't spray evenly or spray too thick. You could airbrush it or even stain it for a cool look then gloss over that. I would like to try something like airbrushing then sanding with a really fine grit and then glossing it. Good luck and let us know how it comes out.
I am a constant evolving music machine. Oh Man, I just forgot what I was playing. Oh well, on to the next song.

I did this some years ago.
I used car spray paint. I gave it about 8 coats waiting for it to dry each time and then gave it several coats of a clear laquer.
That seemed to work quite well.

ok, I found some gloss laquer in an aerosal spray can on stewmac.com so, I think what I might do is get some wood stain, stain the wood the color I like, then spray that over top to get a gloss, throw some fine sanding between layers, and voila! a paint job under $50... think it'll work?
(when I get this baby, hopefully ordering her either by the end of this week or by the beginning of next week, then I'll be sure to include some pictures along the way!)

Came across this in my own search for knowledge and tips of DIY finishing. I also like to see a little (or alot in some cases) of grain in the wood show through. I wouldn't try rushing into anything just yet.
And here's the link to the homepage in case there's other problems with your kit and/or just for your reading pleasure.

These are my guitars.
The Ibanez is an acoustic/electric.

The Schecter is an Omen 6, it used to be electric blue. I painted it with silver flames. Me being Me ,I got bored with it and stripped it of all color. I am happy as a lark that the wood underneath is as pretty as it is. These pictures don't do it justice. I also replaced the pick ups with Semore Duncun HB102.
