What's the difference between Active and Passive monitor speakers? What's best for a quality home studio?

Active speakers are powered speakers, as in, you don't need a power amp.
Passive speakers, while cheaper than actives, do require a power amp.

Personally, for a home studio where there's limited room, I'd go for active monitors.

I use a set a M-Audio BX8 active monitors, and love them. They're a bit bigger than I need, but they do help out with getting your mix right.

Actually, I was looking at the Bx8's the other day! It either comes down to them (brand new at 375 euros) or a set of Tannoy Reveal's (second hand for 100 euros less)... decisions decisions...
