I have always assumed by ear transcriptions were legal for personal use etc.
In Canada is there a differnt legal viewpoint?
I stumbled accross this:

Is there other Canadians here who have an understanding of by ear tabs under Canadian law?

quote from link:

"The exchange of song chords and tabs likely violates Canadian copyright law, however it may be difficult to enforce the law given the nature of the Internet. "

No clue. I was just talking to Jon about this and apparently there's a 'fair use' clause for educators. I think the copyright would apply more to people actually selling individual tabs rather than posting them on the net.

I have never hear of any end user's of by ear tab sites getting into trouble.
99.9% of what I've read say's by ear tab's are legal for personal use, private study etc.

I was just curious as to this dissenting opinion.

As far as I can tell printing, using, saving by ear tabs is legal unless I read otherwise in a second source.
