Overall tone wise, what do you prefer? While I enjoy the tones of them all for certain things, I prefer the huge sound of a 4x12. There's nothing quite like a 120 watt tube head pushing 4 12" speakers.

Personally, I go for a 2x15 or (ideally) a 2x15 with a 6x10.

I combine both a 4x12 and a 4x10.
Marshall JCM 800 into the 4x12.
POD PRO into the effects return of my Marshall JCM 900 into the 4x10. Pod Pro is set mainly set to a Soldano model with a little chorus.
Of course the JCM 800 is the main amp here, but I kick in the 900 at a little lower volume to get a thicker sound.
I run my guitar into a Dunlop Zakk Wylde Signature Cry Baby Wah, then from the Wah to a Boss Delay, then from the delay into a Morley A/B/Y pedal. Also, I have a Boss EQ running through the effects loop of the 800 for boost on solo's....

@JFRICK... I bet that setup sounds awsome and very big. Seems like it would be a pain to haul around though.
What model is your JCM800, is it an original or a reissue? I've alway's wanted a JCM800, but with all the different variations between them, I don't know which one would suit me best.

Telecaster with a Deluxe Reverb,throw in a TU-2 ,Crybaby,RT-66,H2o,wire it up with George L's.
My second fav is a Fender Super Reverb 4x10, but as I'm not gigging all that much anymore, the Deluxe is just perfect. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Twin either (2x12), but the Deluxe is great for me.

PRS, yeah it is a big pain to haul around my setup, but the sound is so good it's worth it.
My JCM 800 is an original model 2205, 50 watts built in '87. I pretty much stole it at $700.

How much gain does it have, and do you need to crank it up to insain volumes to get it to sound brutal?

It has a lot of gain.....and of course the hotter the pups in the guitar, the more it will overdrive.
It gets plenty of gain at lower volumes, but you do have to crank it up to at least 7 to get the full sound of it. The mids and lows really start kicking in at around 7 on the volume. I usually keep the gain at around 8 and the volume at around 7 or 8 with my EVH plugged into it.....
Follow this link and listen to Diseased. That's the only song that our other guitarist didn't play on, solely me, my EVH and the 800. It'll give you an idea of the tone.....

Haha, actually I don't remember. I bought the 800 I have now from the guy that owns the recording studio that has the modded 800. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I did use his modded 800 on that song. I still get the same sound out of the stock 800 I own though....identical to the recording. I was thinking of getting the same mod performed on my 800, but hell, it almost has too much gain now, gotta turn the gain back to around 8 to get the sound I like.

Yer not kiddin!!! Especially with a setup like mine where there isn't gobs of Distortion or anything (not that there's anything wrong with that!!!). I actually ordered the pedalboard set so I can wire my new pedalboard up. I ordered a new Pedaltrain board but aparently they're backordered or somthing.
The clarity you get with these things is unbeliveable,even with warp speed chickin pickin'. Every little nuance comes through.
