Ha, I just got one of those, nice aren't they !

Check this out:
http://www.guitartricks.com/lesson.php?input=8471

In a nut shell you are best off running an S/P DIF out of your GT6 through a coaxial to optical converter (like an M-audio CO2) and into the TOSLINK ports at the back.

Failing that go analogue, get a lead that will condense two mono 1/4 " jacks into a 1/8" TRS stereo jack which will go into the line input in the back.

Then all you need to do is configure the input in the audio section of the system preferences.

Core audio man, it rocks !

The GT6 does amp modeling, right?

Without investing in a great deal of extra gear and mics, you're probably best off going direct from the GT6 to one of the G5's audio-ins (for the short term, the analog in is probably your best bet).

From Apple's website:
Optical Digital Audio
The Power Mac G5 comes with audio capabilities that are not usually found on personal computers. The state-of-the-art optical digital audio in and out ports use the S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) protocol over Toslink cables for connecting to devices such as decks, receivers, digital instruments and even 5.1 surround-sound speaker systems. And since S/PDIF is an optical signal ā€” a beam of light ā€” you wonā€™t get any ground loop interference caused by copper wiring.

Analog Audio
The Power Mac G5 also features high-quality, analog stereo audio line in and line out ports.

EDIT: You're probably best off listening to Dr. Simon. Damn him for hitting "submit" faster than I did.

Cutting edge, man.

Doc is a genius. I have the GT3's and didn't know the 6's had SPDIF outs. If it weren't for all those damn knobs.......

When you say "Garage band", do you mean multiple inputs? Drums, bass, etc...

Garage band is part of the iLife series of mac apps. It is very basic but adequate as an entry level prog.

I use Logic Pro 7

I just checked out a new G5 a buddy picked up. Oh my God!!!! This thing is wicked. His monitor is a flat screen that is 24" wide too.

I need to get out of DOS land. Maybe if I click my heels together and say, "There's no place like Mac, there's no place like Mac."

i got my first pc in '93 or '94, i retired my latest pc in 2004. After 10 years and 3 pc's i have found the better way and it is apple. The forebidden fruit has been tasted. I will never go back to pc unless 1) apple folds 2) apple gets so popular that people start writing virus for it like pc has 3) i become a hermit under the bridge somewhere and the only computational processes i do are counting how many bottles of port i drank

LONG LIVE APPLE!

Dr. Simon + Polera = G5 crew
anymore takers????

yep, the G5s are lovely !

We have been through 8 computers in the last 4 years:

PhD computer: I built this from bits and bobs I could scrounge to write my thesis on. I was actually very nice however I had maxed out the mother board and it was just old so I decided not to bring it to the states with me. Gave it to a friend of mine in the UK.

Gateway laptop..200 MHz processor and weighed as much as a small car. It ran out of steam and was given to Catherine's parents.

2 HP Pavilions (lightening does strike twice): One was a referb (given to a grad student friend of ours) and was just crap. Both had problems with drivers and kept crashing. Both given away as I really didn't feel I could sell them. One (the non-referb) was fixable however I really didn't have the time or the inclination.

iBook (frogmella) beautiful computer, but not really powerful enough for OSX, fine with OS9. Sold on eBay after I got the G4 powerbook.

G4 powerbook: Lovely, my main work computer.

iMac: Catherine's home computer. Works very well

G5: Simon's studio computer. 'Nuff said !
