Tone: An Elusive Topic

Next Lesson

In this tutorial we're gonna talk about some basic concepts that have to do with guitar tone. Guitar tone is one of the most hyped topics in music, and it can be a jungle of confusion. Why is it that some guitar players have weird tone, but make it sound super cool? How do some players make really cheap gear sound amazing? Why can't you just copy someone else's gear and have the same tone as them and how do the same players make all this different gear sound similar?

In this tutorial we'll start with the basics and work our way up to those questions. We're gonna start out with the most basic controls you find on amps and how they affect your sound and playing: bass, treble, mids, reverb, gain, and more. We'll also talk about the controls you find on most guitars and how to use them.

After walking you through the basic amp and guitar controls, we're gonna talk about how your playing technique affects your tone: pick type, playing with your fingers, strings gauge, where you pick, and much more.

And after going through all the lessons we're gonna jam back and forth and use some of the techniques we've covered, so that hopefully by the end of this tutorial, you'll have a whole new understanding of how your playing affects the tone and how the tone affects your playing!
