Mustaine used high output humbucker guitars, usually flying V models. He plugged into super high gain Marshall amps. All of Megadeth’s lead guitarists also used various high output humbucker guitars & high gain loud amps. Typically, these tones were a scooped EQ profile, which means to set the bass high, the treble high and the mids low - hence, ‘scooped’. The result was the classic sound of modern metal guitar tone. Most of the rhythm technique involved heavy palm muted & lots of single note riffs & power chords in the lower register of the guitar.
