What's up, it's Mike from Guitar Tricks, teaching you "My Wave" as made famous by Soundgarden. This is a mid 90s grunge classic that features some killer riffage using a very unusual tuning and some odd time signatures.

There are 2 guitar layers in this tutorial. Guitars 1 and 2 are crunch guitars tuned to an open B & E tuning.

The intro features Guitar 1 playing a simple riff in 4/4, that soon changes to 5/4 when the whole band comes in. The main riff of the song stays in 5/4, and is used in both verse sections. The prechorus returns to 4/4 intro riff, then launches us into the chorus, where both guitar layers play very different parts to cool effect. There's a tension filled breakdown section between the first chorus and second verse that features another cool riff. The extended outro riffs on Guitar 1's chorus riff, and eventually jams out into a psychedelic wall of noise to end off the tune.

For the single guitar performance of this song, simply play Guitar 1's part all the way through.

In the following lessons, we'll talk about one finger chords, pull offs, palm muting, and odd time signatures. You'll need a slide to play Guitar 2's riff in the chorus sections. We are in the key of E major with a 5/4 time signature that alternates between sections. The tempo is 127 BPM.
