There are two distinct electric guitar layers in this song. Guitar 1 provides the foundation of the tune, focusing on the groove and playing riffs. Guitar 2 adds some lead fills to the mix. Both parts come together with some complimentary interaction.

The intro riff (which is also the chorus riff) uses triads to establish a melodic groove right off the top. The intro also features a quick solo of tight punchy pentatonic classic rock licks. The verse brings down the dynamic with plenty of space for the vocals, while the guitar outlines a simple chord progression. The bridge also uses the open space by playing a different chord progression and incorporating some extended chord voicings. The solo section gets down and dirty with some chugging palm muted rhythms and killer lead licks.

We are using E-flat (slack) tuning for this tutorial, so be sure to tune your guitar down one half step.

In the following lessons, we’ll talk about palm muting, barre chords, triads, dynamics, and great rock soloing. We are in the key of E minor, with a 4/4 time signature, at a tempo of 127 BPM.
