Since we're dealing with country-flavored rock and not rock-flavored country, it's perfectly okay to use your regular your rock gear, like Marshall amps, Les Paul guitars, and distortion pedals. The most important thing in my opinion is that the gear has to sound bluesy. If it gets too modern and hi-gain sounding you lose one of the most important elements in southern rock, which is that wonderful gritty and raw flavor that is so vital to the sound.
Other than that, guitars like Stratocasters and Telecasters are used a lot. I'll be using my Telecaster, and I'll be running it through a modeled VOX AC30 amp with a little bit of reverb, and with an overdrive pedal similar to a Tube Screamer in front of it. Other than that I have some subtle tremolo in the tone and a quick delay with just one repeat. This type of delay is often referred to as "slap back delay" and it works like a charm for this style of music.
