As mentioned in the introduction, this song is in 3/4 time. We will be playing a simple strum that includes one bass note played with the thumb, and two down strums made by brushing down with the fingers. Each chord will have a specific bass: G and Em have a 6th string bass, A7 is the 5th string bass, and the D chord has a 4th string bass.

Your bass note will be beat one and the two down strums will represent beats two and three. (bass, down, down, OR 1, 2, 3.)

The idea is to hit the bass string with the thumb in such a way that it rings for all three beats in the measure. A calm, semi-round right hand will help keep you positioned over your strings and hitting accurate bass notes.
