The guitar plays a suppportive role in the verse sections by playing a drone note all the way through.

First off, note the chord progression of the tune, provided by the synths: G, Bm, Em, D, C or (I, IIIm, VIm, V, IV). Notice how this chord progression stays constant all the way through the song. The production, layers, and dynamics all shift from section to section, and are what makes this track interesting to listen to.

So this drone provides a nice bed to tie everything together. Watch out for adding that 5th note (D note) into it just to keep things interesting. This layer creates some tension, which you can add to by getting aggressive with your strumming in the last 2 bars leading into the chorus.
