In this lesson we'll look at how we can play one chord, a B-flat major, in order to solidly establish an R&B style.

We play the notes of the chord broken into several different rhythmically separated voicings and phrases. This immediately gives us a rhythmic and melodic approach to playing instead of simply strumming all the notes of a chord at once. The first inversion voicing of the chord, especially on the lower strings, adds a thick, warm, bluesy sound to the chord. The hammer-ons and pull-offs add a lot of bluesy flavor and rhythmic bounce as well.

Practice this lesson a lot! Just this small phrase will give you great insight and practice at R&B guitar style and everything else that we will do in this tutorial.
