Surf Spy Riffing

The little melodic theme we're gonna check out is based out of the key of E minor, and you'll notice that with surf as well as Spanish music the minor sixth becomes a very significant note to reference in your melodies and licks.

In the right hand, you want to pick close to the bridge for several reasons. It just doesn't sound quite right toward the neck; the genuine surf tone comes from strong "pick" sound. Also the string tension gets slinkier the further away from the bridge you are, so sixteenth notes can become really sloppy sounding. You really want to be able to to this sort of thing to add interest to the otherwise straight 8th note feel, to add those articulations and make them stand out amid the dense reverb.
