Many times you'll find yourself playing this live with another guitarist and other musicians. In these situations you have to choose a tasteful part to play and not walk all over the other musicians. Here's where knowing the bass line works well.
Listen to the bass player, lock in with the part. Many of the old funk and R&B tunes have a bass line doubled by the guitar player. It's a great technique and in the case of this song, it's down right cool.
