hello everyone, I'm Dave from near Cambridge in the UK.

I am 51 and hve been wanting to learn the guitar for ever.

Only started in February of this year, bought myself a beautiful Taylor acoustic and away I went!

I very quickly realised I have no musical talent whatsoever but I wont let that stop me.

Anyway, hello everyone....

Hi Dave. Congratulations on the Taylor. I really liked Lisa's little talk on 'talent' in the early tutorials. I'm gob-smacked that I seem to be able to carry a tune and strum in time. Anything more will be bonus! My guitar is a department store classical bought by a friend sixty years ago. It doesn't sound any worse than my 70-year-old voice.

I'd be willing to bet that you have more talent than you think. What you might lack right now is the physical ability to play as well as you would like. That's because everyone starts right there; hands like two left feet. It's always good to know that you are in the same company of every guitar player ever...including the legends.

So, enjoy, stick to it and most importantly, remember to have fun playing the things you do learn and when striving to reach a new goal, it's usually not a matter of if you can but when you can.

Yeah, what Jeff said. It takes patience and repetition. I'm 50 (51 this month) and started three years ago. I've made a ton of progress. Building finger strengh and toughening the fingers is important and takes a while. I've come to think of learning a song as programming my brain and the brain likes slow, consistent repetition. Then sleep to process it all.

Enjoy!

Hey, Dave! Nice choice on the Taylor!

I don't have any talent either but I still enjoy noodling away. Keep practicing things will get better, have fun and enjoy

Aloha,

Dude, I'm about to turn 46 and I've been playing for all of 4 days total. In my life. I haven't picked up any instrument at all in probably 30 years, easily. Everyone has to start somewhere, and while it might take us a bit longer to get our bodies to move, and we have to compensate with wrist braces, longer warm-up exercises, and the like, I figure that it's never too late to learn new tricks. Can't be a wiz over night, you know? It's not a race, sit back and enjoy it and don't let the pressure of not being a prodigy bear you down.

Hello Dave,

I don't consider myself that talented, but I can change chords and at least strum a rhythm. That's more than a whole bunch of other people can say, and it's not like I got interested in the guitar to please other people. I got interested for my own sake and am not looking to perform for anyone.

Sounds like you did well with your guitar purchase. I have an Eastman AC420 that's nicer than I deserve, and a NEX-sized Aiersi that I got on Amazon for $100 back in December that's nicer than its price tag would suggest.
