Hi,

Just wondering when starting a Solo is it common practice to start with the Key note or a Chord tone from the Key ? What is the general "Rule" ?

Thanks.

You can start with either the root note, or a chord tone of the first chord. Both are done just as frequently. Beginners often find it helpful to start with the root note of the first chord.

Improvising, playing or composing lead solos has 3 steps.

1. Use the key signature (the scale all or most of the song is using)

2. Target chord tones.

3. Build melodic phrases.

This collection of tutorials covers all of that!

Hope that helps!
