Yes, altering harmony doesn't affect a key its in. Imagine that all the music in the world would use the same cadence, would that sound boring.[br][br]I-IV-V harmony you desribed is one of the most used, and recognizable. Especially in blues.

[p]Yes, most likely. And from a beginner perspective that's the best way to look at it.

But you would not know for sure until you know what the melody is. Or what notes were being played over the chords. The voice leading (which specific notes over which specific chords) determine harmonic function & key signature.

In the key of C:

C (I)

F (IV)

G (V)

So as long as all the melody notes are from the C major scale, then you are in C, but the chord progression is:

G (V) / C (I) / F (IV)

But if the melody has a B-flat, then you are using the F major scale (f, g, a, b-flat, c, d, e) & you are in the key of F with a modualtion:

G (II or V of V) / C (V) / F (I)

I have a whole series of tutorials on music theory if you are interested.

Hope that helps!

Chris,

You seem to have a lot of interesting tutorials that as best I can tell are not in the main curriculum tracks (e.g., Fundamentals 1 through Blues II/Rock II/Acoustic II Style) or in the "Learn Styles of Guitar" block. For example, the stuff you noted above, on music theory - is that something in the general Guitar Tricks channel; something I would probably only come across if I did a focused search for it?

There are 3 primary categories of tutorials on GT.

1. Core Learning System. This is an integrated step by step curriculum of lessons that start at absolute beginner. The idea here is to isolate & streamline the cirriculum all in one step-by-step process.

2. Song Catalog. This is all the songs GT has the secured the rights to teach.

3. Instructor Directories. These are more specialized topics, sometimes organized in sub-categories. You can view the instructors & their specialty here.

https://www.guitartricks.com/instructors.php

There is some overlap in the directories if an instructor has done songs or course material. But my point is that you can find the topics or catagories on the directories!

For example, I have over a thousand lesson on various topics, organized by topic or focus. In general, these are for diving deeper into any given concept or technique. They are not necessary per se to the streamlined core learning system, but will help once a student develops more interest in a certain style or technique.

You can search for it, or just look through the instructor directories. But by far the easiest way is to just ask! If you are a student it can be difficult to know what you are looking for since you haven't learned it or been exposed to it yet. That's what the forum is for.

Hope this helps!
