Gear and Recording
This track features his Fender Squier guitar, with a stock middle pickup but upgraded with 2 Dimarzio pups: mini humbucker at the bridge and single coil at the neck. He also dropped the tuning to Eb. The effects processor was his recently acquired Zoom G2 unit. On this he dialed up a Mesa Boogie amp model and added some compression and just a little chorus. Recording was simply straight into a laptop from the Zoom via USB. The software used was Cubase LE, in which he also created the drums from samples by drag-and-dropping each individual sample into the timeline. Admittedly it was very time consuming this way, but in the end it worked well. The final mixing only consisted of a bit more compression.
Review
This is just a demo. There's only the rhythm guitar, lead, and drums...that's it. But man, it rocks! Hmmm, thus the title, Rock Demo I guess. Actually he has a tentative working title for it now..."Cruisin".
The intro riff gets you hooked for the first few measures before the lead comes in that goes through a whole range of licks and techniques and goes progressively more "shred" through the end. Harmonics, bends, slides and wide vibrato that leads to fast legato and tremolo picking.
Perhaps the strongest influence that is apparent is Joe Satriani, being the initial inspirational origin of the track. Yet Shaz recognizes a Steve Vai influence on the slides and Yngwie Malmsteen on the chord changes and vibrato.
He's had the basic idea of this for a few months, but has had problems with equipment that prevented expansion of it. Problems resolved, and now that he has this demo down, he's currently working on producing a more refined version. Judging from this first take, it should turn out well and we'll eagerly await any updates.
