Listening Post Spotlight

This month's spotlight shines on the "Slow Blues" track posted by GT member FrankAxtell . Frank is a professional musican and teacher, evident from the quality of his playing and recording. He graduated from the prestigous Berklee College of Music and studied under Vincent Bredice (authored Mel Bay's Complete Book of Guitar Improvisation) for many years. He's had extensive recording and touring experience, but nowadays he spends his time playing around the south Florida area with his jazz fusion group, The Frank Axtell Quartet, and teaching bass and guitar in his studio based in Palm Beach.

Track Info

Taking the forefront on this track is his '62 Fender Strat Reissue with '68 pups, and a 1970 JMP 50W Marshall Mark II paired with a 1970 Marshall 4x12 slant cab with 25W Celestion greenbacks. His pedalboard consists of an Xotic BB preamp, Xotic RC booster, TS9 Tube screamer, Maxon OD9, Electro Harmonix memoryman, Arion SC-1 chorus, Carl Martin compressor, and an RMC 1 wah wah. As stated, Frank also plays bass, as is the case here. But for recording purposes he uses Apple Jam packs for drums, or he'll sequence them out from scratch. His recording gear consists of an Apple Dual 2.7 Ghz G5, Apple MacBook Pro 2.33 Ghz 17", Logic Pro 7, Logic Express, Presonus Firepod, Motu Micro Lite, and Mackie HR 824 monitors. All the production is done in Logic Pro.

Review

The backing on this track is very straightforward with a simple progression. Yet it pairs nicely with his expressive leads with fast runs and thoughtful phrasing. But really, the song speaks for itself. Quite aptly, it's "frank".
