This is just a little sample to ask how to improve my guitar tone, because when I posted some thing a few months ago everyone said it was horrible.

This is with my J&D luthiers 7 string on the bridge pick-up. It sounds a little fuzsy, but it's coming from a cheap practice amp. Should I use an equalizer to take down the mid or high end a bit?

hmm, its hard to say. What amp are you using ? Maybe through a decent amp it would sound good. I think maybe you need more treble and scoop the mids.
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

Less treble would make that sound better, its ...for the lack of a better word " tangy".

He actually needs to do the exact opposite of that.
There seem to be no mids in this short clip whatsoever.

I agree, less treble, boost the mids and adjust the bass. For the music you seem to play, you probably want a more beefy sound. What were your amp settings on that peice?

The amp has only two EQ knobs. I've got the treble on 10, bass on 7 and gain on 7. I used an EQ in Fruity Loops too, which probably isn't the best program to produce music but it's easy. It had a the low end up high and the mid raised a bit.

I'll try to record some stuff again, with drums and with more mids and less treble, as soon as possible.

I've recorded the intro to The Berzerker's Forever.

http://www.geocities.com/sevekranz/forever.mp3

The tone is a lot more 'beefy' although it doesn't quite have the low grumble to make your balls shake. I recorded it early on a weekday morning, so I was tired and rushed so the playing isn't the best and I couldn't get the drums to have that Berzerker sound. Yeah, excuses excuses but I thinks it's a bit of improvement in the tone. Tell me what you think.

Yes it is an improvement, but still the tone is not too good.

I have a few solutions for you.....

1) Try and lower the distortion a little, the amp is crappy but this should stop some of the fuzzy sound.

2) If you can, buy a digital amp processor/modeler. These give instant solutions, sometimes, to our tone. Why get one?
If your amp is cheap, its probably a solid state amp. Solid state distortion is horrible. It makes guitars sound really bad. That's why almost all the pros use hybrids or tube amps. Tube amp distortion sounds great, but they are expensive, and most of us can't shell out the cash to get one. Solution? Digital processor (I reccomend the RP series by digitech). While using this, you can choose one of its onboard amp models, and use that distortion. While its not exactly the same tone as if buying the real amp, its pretty close and great if your looking for your own tone. You just get the sound out of the box, and use the amp as a speaker(set the amp on the clean channel). I do this same process, and it makes you sound like you put in hundreds of dollars, for something that was only $50 - 100.

Good luck man.

That seems like a pretty good idea. I was going to get another amp but seeing that I'm not playing a lot of gigs at the moment, I might do that.

Thanks

ermm.. i dont mean to be an a$$ or something, but for the sake of these boards quality: when you have no clue what you are talking about, then please refrain from throwing wild guesses at those who seek for help. this will damage more than it helps. no offense!
