Farewell to Gear

You know those guitars (or amps or pedals or girlfriends) you get rid of then you just wish you wouldn't have done it? I buy and sell stuff all the time, so there's a lot I wish i'd have kept. Y'all share the names of equipment lost that you miss. The main one that springs to mind is my first electric.... a fender telecaster.

I haven't sold anything. I'm the biggest pack rat on the face of the earth. I even kept the boxes my effects pedals came in. I couldn't imagine selling anything.

Some people have that so bad its a disorder. They can't throw anything out, their house is cluttered with boxes of useless things like old newspapers or used pieces of string or boxes of grocery reciepts and the like. Maybe you shoudl see a doctor, haha. I've never sold anything either man, I just haven't aquired a lot. 2 electrics,(one for rock, one for jazz) 2 amps (1 portable, one for home) and a wah wah pedal, there, that's my gear. Oh yeah, an acoustic that needs a setup. Wait, I did sell an old gibson acoustic from the 1920s,from before when they knew how to make guitars. Neck like a baseball bat, wide and thick, body was too small, but they gave me 450 for it. It would've been worth more if it sounded and played nicely.

In the early sixties, I bought a red Strat for $75. I don't know the exact year, but I suspect that it was a '59 Fiesta Red model, which is worth a ton today. The same guy had a white SG, also for $75, but I could only buy one. I really didn't like the Strat and I traded it in on an an Epiphone Casino. Fastest neck of any guitar I've ever owned. I wish I had that guitar today. Soon afterwards I bought a custom Tele and alternated between that and the Epi. I traded both of them in on a '68 Les Paul Custom. I've thought about selling the Les Paul several times, but my wife (acquired in 1971) wouldn't let me. Remind me to thank her.

20 years and about 20 guitars with only 3 left to mention. I wish I had about 10 of them back. I bought an Ibanez Destroyer brand new when I was in Japan. Gone. Fender Esquire that played like a dream. Gone. Les Paul. Gone. you get the picture. Ultimately, it is a sympotom. It took me a long time to figure out that it wasn't the guitars but me.

Speaking of Ibanez Destroyers, I got one last year used for $1000. I think it's from the 70's...it's pretty beat up. It's the best guitar I have ever heard and played in my life. And what's funny is that I'd never heard of them before, but once I played it, I had to get it. It's my main axe today. The only way to take it from me would be to pry it from my cold, dead hands. I'm considering being buried with it....
