How about opening w Jumpin Jack Flash and putting Sweet Emotion later in the set, toward the end, perhaps even before Sweet Child of Mine?

Interesting to see 8675309 on the setlist. To this day, I remember how to play that song :-). People still like to hear that song?

Believe it or not it still gets a good reaction. We've tried to retire it a few times, but it always gets requested back.
Plus we have more than enough songs (2 more sets besides this one) that if we feel its not for this crowd we can skip right over it and not miss a beat.

Wow... that's a long and ambitious set. The venue expects you to make the crowd want to stay (and spend money). I think I would definitely be staying for more. Very nice. I hope it goes well for you.

I always like it when a cover band starts the night with 4-5 chunka-chunka/roots rock type songs played back-to-back without chatter or pause. Sets a nice tone for the night and tells me the band is up to the challenge of being my entertainment for the (whole) night.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks! Next Friday it is.
Yeah, we are not too gabby. I'm sure the first 5 songs will go off before anyone says anything.
We also don't jam out and make the songs extra long (good and bad I guess). Though we do tend to go from one directly into another a lot of the time.
The second set has the same amount of songs. Then we have a 3rd (mini) set; if we even need it.

Thanks again for the input!

After 4 or 5 faster song you need to add a slower song. People can't dance all night if they don't get a slower song to rest up. You can just announce were going to slow it down a little to let people rest and grab a drink. They always seemed to understand when we did it.

Your not just playing, your controlling the crowd and if your playing at a bar they want to sell drinks, so slowing it down will get some off the dance floor so they have time to drink something. That will make your employer happy.

We had bar owners tell us to take longer breaks and slow it down, everyone is on the floor and were not selling any drinks.

Remember, the key to a bar band is to sell beer. You may be there to play but the bar owner/manager is there to sell drinks like haghj500 said. That's how they can afford to pay you.

So for the set list, 867-5309 Jenny, What I Like About You and the Stones and all that will do exactly that so it's a good set list. Ok to have other stuff thrown in (Incubus) for fun but the more nostalgic the better. Just keep the personal choices to a minimum...so long as you have fun with the other songs it's all good.

You do need some slow stuff thrown in there. If it's your standard bar band fair, you gotta have it. It is a balance between great and fun songs, slow songs and break times to maximize the fun aspect will keeping the bar owner in the dough.

I remember running sound for a fellow band in a small town many years ago. A two nighter. The first night (Friday), the place was wild and people were 'hanging from the ceiling' kinda stuff. Night two (Saturday), it was just the pool players and they were crabbing about how the bass drum was too loud (and the faders were at rock bottom so it was just the drummer!). The bar owner said that it was a great Friday but the band overdid it for a two nighter. The first night satisfied all the music junkies and only the regulars remained. It was a very 'hard rock' set but was kind of danceable. So the key, we learned, was that you wanna make people dance and have a good time but giving them a concert is a whole other deal. My friends band gave a concert but the bar owner wanted a live jukebox. It was an interesting lesson.

Side story, the bar was about 40 miles from home so we all decided just to drive back in the band van between nights. One of the guitar players was driving and said 'we have plenty of gas'....Right. Northern Minnesota, winter and 5 below zero. Brilliant! We ran out of gas almost in the middle of nowhere. We were puttin' out of gas near the top of a hill and just made it over the apex...and coasted in to a gas station that was 5 minutes from closing. Put in 5 bucks and we were off....and that guitar player was verbally brutalized for the remainder of the weekend. :D

Also be sure to consider your audience interaction between song sets. Knowing how you are going to interact with the crowd can greatly alter the effect of the song order.
