I have been told I am making good music , but for the life of me I am having a hard time learning songs. I can play the chords and strumming patterns, but it sounds nothing like the original song. Any suggestions?

What songs are you trying to learn & play?
If it's a song in the GT song catalog, then I'd encourage you to check out the gear & tone lesson to try & approximate the original. And the next step is to learn the song chord for chord, strum for strum & note for note.
