Two approaches 1) The structured approach. This is about having a finishing point already fixed in your mind. Pick some one whose tone you wish to emulate and find out what kit they use. Then dial in those settings and fiddle about until you get either what you are after or something you like.
2) the random approach. Fiddle with stuff until it sounds good!
