I got the october GuitarOne issue recently and it had "for the love of god" in the tabs. So I tried playing it and it sounded nothing like the recording because my tone was too much on the high end. My guitar has 2 humbuckers, and I found a good way to make the warm, muted kind of tone on the song (and a lot of other vai songs). Switch to the neck pickup, roll of the tone knob completely, and it should sound a lot like his tone (at least on my guitar it does.) Im sure a lot of you have already discovered this .

I wouldn't roll off the tone completely, but I would recommend switching to the neck pickup. Especially in that particular song. Also, Steve uses Dimarzio pickups. The Evolution, I think it's called, is what they put in his newest seven string. If you look at the stats on them, they have good mids and highs, but the bass they put out is much more than regular pickups.

Sorry. His seven string is the Universe and it has the new "Blaze" pickups. But his older models used the Evolution pickups.

If you watch him play that song on G3 you can see him switch from his front pickup to his back then back to the front then again to the back for the rest of the song. Also Yngwie uses his Front pickup for almost all of his songs.
Sounding better is in your head ,not your amp.
