Blizzard of Ozz - Ozzy Osbourne - you don't win guitar world's "best album" for nothing
I have to agree with surfing with the alien and master of puppets..... Segovia revisited is good.... same with some yngwie ones....
There are only two important things in life - There's music and theres girls, not necessarily in that order....

I don't think Satriani or Vai ever really raised the bar, they just made the bar a little more visible to pop music.

Some albums that should probably be on there...
Allan Holdsworth - Road Games
Greg Howe's self titled album
Shawn Lane - Powers Of Ten
Return To Forever - Light As A Feather
Al Dimeola - Elegant Gypsy
John Coltrane - Blue Train
Weather Report - Black Market
Weather Report - Heavy Weather

And really, with SRV... was he mainstream?

For YEARS and years he was virtually unknown, but still putting out great music.

I feel that Satriani did raise that bar... he influenced many of us on this board... and was one of the best talents of his time and still is.... and when Steve Vai strated going solo... he just raised that bar some more.... i still cant find any NEW ( NEW) guitar players who can raise that bar again. ( although eric sardinas is very good).

SRV was definatley mainstream... back in his day.... when you turned on the radio... you had a good chance of hearing Pride and Joy or Couldn't Stand the Weather... i call that mainstream.

I meant before that :P

If you don't hear the bar being raised anymore, you haven't heard much guitar playing.

If you're considering new as 1980+, then lets take a look at just a COUPLE.

Greg Howe - Continuously raised the bar on every album he's put out since his first album.

Shawn Lane - BROKE the bar

Frank Gambale - Once again, practically broke the bar.

Tony Macalpine - I have an instructional pamphlet he put out in the early-mid 80s. Some of the techniques in there were at least 5 years before their time (at least before I heard them on any albums).

I own most of Satriani and Vai's work, and although its good, I don't see whats so groundbreaking or new about it.

Hell, Kirk Hammet has influenced many people on this board, but no one is going to seriously say he's that incredible a player, its just his music is more available to the average person than that of the people that were really changing how the guitar was played.

Well i have never heard mch f shawn lane... but tony mac has been out for quite a while hes not really new.... ur rite greg howe has broken that bar...... but I wouldnt just take vai and satch off the list because someone along the years has gotten better than them. I'm not saying stach and vai are the best guitarist in the worlds.... and that there bars cannot be broken... but..... im not going to say that they havent made the best albums of all time. What makes a good cd is great song writing and catchy leads.... and im not sure Greg Howe or Shawn Lane has done that. Satch was good enough to attaract that mainstream audience.

Even though the music isn't full of Techninabllity ( new word) but the new audioslave cd was well written. The reason why they were on the top charts is because they can write thosecatchy leads.

Same thing with Satch.... He writes catchy music... and has great guitar playing to go along with it.... I have yet to see a NEW NEW NEW guitar player do that. Name one guitar player in the last 3 years that have been on the top 40 lists... besides him. ( im sure there are but not alot of them)

I think they did. Both put guitar instrumental albums back on the map and into the mainstream after they'd been unfasionable for eons. I dont see what players like Michale Angleo, Tony McAlpine, Paul Gilbert and others menetioned here have done to raise the bar.

Macalpine: Well, Macalpine took some of the tapping popularized by say, Eddie Van Halen and really took it to another leve (even before Greg Howe!). Thats called being innovative. As far as rasising the bar... he had very innovative phrasing, his songs were great, and he maintained an almost unheard of level of musicianship during those early days (still does, but now its a more common thing).

All of Macalpine's solo albums not only feature INCREDIBLE guitar work, but also feature him on keys..and not just neoclassical stuff, he's a classicaly trained pianist that plays everything from Chopin to Beethoven!

As for Paul Gilbert... as far as raising the bar, he was definitely the fastest guy out there when Racer X's first album came out! But he didn't only play fast, he was a very controlled player. His alternate and sweep picking was absolutely flawless, so precise.

Some of the others I mentioned, to go into more detail:

Greg Howe, the guy took what Van Halen did with tapping (and although I don't know for sure, I'm assuming he heard some of MAcalpine's work, since he used a few of his ideas), and just completely turned it upside down. He tapped up, down, all over scales and arpeggios.

Frank Gambale, is quite simply, the sweep picking master. One of the best fusion players out there. His music is very complex, but still is very listenable and catchy. Not to mention he's a very well learned musician. When a lot of more rock players play jazz, you can tell they're not used to it, they only know a few inversions. When I saw Gambale last summer he played like he'd been playing off those charts for all of his life.

And please don't go into that top 40 nonsense.

But hey, since you tried.

Greg Howe.. has played guitar for the Backstreet Boys, Enrique Iglesias, and Justin Timberlake for the past few years. I even went and saw him live, just to support him. Its not my kind of music, but they really let him rip out some awesome guitar parts.

CAB (with Tony Macalpine) won a grammy a two years ago for their second album (not exactly top 40, but grammy's and pop music have always been closely linked).

But just because they aren't heard on the radio much, or aren't on tv doesn't mean they can't influence people.

And why do they have to be new?

Greg Howe may have been around for 15 years or so now, but he's STILL improving, still doing new things, writing better music.

Hell, heres an extreme example, Allan Holdsworth... I think his first recordings were around '68 or '69. The guy is still trying new things, improving his musicianship and playing. For all you know his next album may just be the next Rising Force, or (insert some other big guitar related album here).

Well im just thinking about people who picked up the guitar after Satriani and Vai did.... I mean really take a look at my "lost generation".

When i go to Dream Theater concerts or G3 concerts theres a Kids:Adult ratio of about 1:45... well at least up in the CT area. Im just saying has there really been anyone new out of my generation who has shown abillity to play better than them....... iit mkaes u think wha music wll be like in years.if you find someone great then let me know....

I'd have to say my favorite albums of all time would have to be (and in no particular order, thats too much like thinking lol)....

1. Pink Floyd - The Wall
2. Tool - All of their albums with the exception of Opiate.
3. Metallica - Master of Puppets
4. NIN - Downward Spiral
5. System of a Down - Toxicity
6. A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms
7. Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Inifinite Sadness
8. Pearl Jam - Ten
9. Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I
10. Korn - Issues

Some of you may not agree with these but all these albums go back and reflect where I was at certain points in my life and all hold different meanings to me, so these are the greatest albums of all time to me :)

Not really, but I am slightly obsessive-compulsive, so it really irks me to see a post that looks all messy, when it is so simple to make it look clean and nice.

If you think I'm bad, though, take a look at Lordathestrings... if he was a SuperMod, things'd be waaay different around here...(in a very good way, but that's the OCD talkin')
... and that's all I have to say about that.

now ... it never said "greatest guitar albums" so here i go

1. entombed - "clandestine" ... still my fav death metal record... even tho some of the musicianship on it is really ... sloppy... it is one of my most-listened-to albums and has influenced me a lot as a guitar player

2. life of agony - "river runs red" ... again ... maybe not the greatest playing ever, but it really %&$§"! rocks and gives me a kick in the butt everytime i hear it

3. metallica - "...and justice for all" ... now ... why do yall put "master of puppets" down? havent listened to that one in years, but ill have to say "...and justice for all" has always been my favorite metallica record ...

4. dream theater - "awake" ... so far...my favorite dt album ... i really dont dig la bries singing and on this record he at least sometimes settles for a natural voice :) plus the album has a sorta darker feel to it than most of their other stuff, and i like that

5. eminem - "marshall mathers lp" ... i just love it ...

6. garth brooks - "roping the wind" ... yeah i know. but i love it and i dig the playing on it and ahh the memories ...

7. joe satriani - "the extremist" ... i can never decide which satch album i like better "surfing with the alien" or this one here... i went for this one for this thread :)

8. pantera - "a vulgar display of power" ... i guess the title speaks for itself :) just great

ok thats all i can think of right now ...

1) Blackwater Park - Opeth

2) Animals - Pink Floyd (one of many great Pink Floyd albums that are awesome to listen to from start to finish)

3) Band Of Gypsys - Jimi Hendrix

4) IV - Led Zeppelin

5) Lateralus - Tool

6) Three - John Butler Trio (an amazing album from a great Australian band. Great solos from John Butler using a 12 string guitar with 11 strings, best shown in the song 'Betterman')

7) Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Red Hot Chili Peppers (their best and before John Fruciante turned into a bum)

8) Strapping Young Lad - Strapping Young Lad (one of the best metal albums around and usually overlooked)

9) C*nt - Blood Duster (a suprisingly catchy, porngrove/grindcore/death metal album. Very amusing with song titles like 'don'tcallmehomeboyya'c*nt', 'ijustfinishedsuckingoffmetalheadsinthemensurinals', 'iloveitwhenjoepesciswears' and 'anotherslackarsedaussieband'. It's also funny seeing them holding up "Fred (Durst) Gets Me Stiff" signs in the 'pornstorestiffi' video clip)

10) Manipulating Agent - Katalyst (a great easy-listening, groove and funk-driven album. Great scratching too)

Right... this is only for this minute mind

Radiohead: OKC - A masterpiece. Not just the songs but the SOUND of it...

Pumpkins: Siamese Dream - Amazing album. Huge fat guitars, amazing melodys, and songs that make you cry

Pink Floyd: The Wall- Maybe its because i got this just as i was breaking up with a girl, but the songs and the theme just hit a chord with me (no pun intended)

Rage: Rage - Anyone who can make the chorus of the first song on their debut album "BURN! BURN! Yes your gunna BURN!" deserve a listen

HIM: Love Metal - Heard it? Download The Sacrament then reply

Erm... There are more, but I'm blank at the minute. I'll post more later
