im no expert on this but i found this routine to be very effective for me, worked on it for about a week and did wonders for my speed and tone:

1.using a clean tone, crank the mid all the way up and use the bridge pickup, practice the arp/sweep very very slowly, if you want you can use alternate picking, the important thing is to accustom your fingers to the shape of the sweep, never ever speed up, not unless its very clean 2. speed it up, then use the picking hand to mute, moving it with the pick as you sweep. the amount of muting that you apply is up to you, the idea is to eliminate the noise and not the tone of the note that you are picking 3. if still not satisfied, use the neck pickup turn the mid down then add some ditortion and voila! instant burst of speed :)

it took me abt 6 mos of useless practice and just a week of realization to make it work, and i don't want anybody to waste time like i did (lol) its hard to explain verbally but hope this helps. sorry for the long post :)
