Help with Cakewalk

Anyone here use cakewalk? I recording a song of mine, and I want to be able to hear the rhythm guitar when I improvise over it, but I can't seem to be able to record while listening to the part I already recorded. Anyone know what to do ?

I have used cakewalk for a while, but i just got windows 2000 put on and it's won't work for some reason, anyway try to go to your rhythm parts propertys and change the output from midi to sound emulator or something like that.

Ok, click on "Settings" in Cakewalk, then "Audio options..." , "Advanced" , then you can select "Enable Simultaneous Record/Playback".

If this option is un-clickable, like it is with me, it probably means you've got a half-duplex soundcard that doesnt allow recording/playback at the same time.

But any computer that isnt damn old like mine will have a full-duplex soundcard, so what i said above probably should work.

Hey thanks trend I did what you said to, and to my extreme sorrow, found that I do indeed have a "half duplex" sound card. This sucks... and I just bought it too because my old one wasn't working.

Welcome to the wonderfull world of recording WITHOUT backing tracks, hehe.

When i record, i just make a backing track with midi, that plays the chords im playing over. Maybe try that?

That sounds ok, how do I do that in cakewalk? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm new to computer recording.

Ok, just double-click on a track, and select midi in "source" and "port"
Then click ok.

Then right-click on a track, choose piano roll, and then you can make a midi track.


Recording an audio track, and making a midi track are about everything i can do with the program, hehe, i'm not a quick learner when it comes to software. ;)
