Hi,

I can very comfortably read music of the first 4 bars.  I'm looking for exercises that I can work on to increase and practice my reading skills of the 5th position.  Can anyone direct me to lessons in Guitar tricks that cover this?

With thanks

Cath

This tutorial covers the A major scale in 3 configurations.  Starting at lesson 2 the scale is played with the root note in low postion on the 5th fret.

This companion tutorial covers the minor scale in a similar manner.

These tutorials are the next level up continuting the pattern across the fretboard to the other strings (& higher registers of the fretboard).

Also, just about any song that has parts using that area of the fretboard can be a good workout for reading.  What is your skill level & preferred style of music?

Hope that helps!

Hi Christopher,

Thanks so much for your reply.  I just clicked in the first link and that's exactly what I'm looking for.  lessons on expanding my learning to be able to read music in the 5th position and further up the fret board. I like scales and like working on perfecting my finger work.  I can read tablature, but beginning my music training as a kid (in classical) and now returning to it in my 50's the fundamentals of classical training are still strong.  Being able to read the notes is more to my line of thinking than working on tablature .  I'm into learning fingerpicking styles, would love to move on to travis style playing, I love the blues as well. Classical is not an area of interest anymore as much as just being able to play tunes I like with chords and notes around the fretboard but it seems to me that being able to read music and apply that reading all along the fretboard is key.  I keep looking for music pieces that are finger picking but get stuck as I cant read beyond fret 4.  I started a travis picking course on line and got stuck with the music reading part of it.  It's a skill I would like to perfect so I can find pieces of music I like and learn to play them.  I didnt get time to click on all the links but will begin with the first one and work my way through them methodically.  I've started face to face lessons fortnightly and also play around with lessons on guitar tricks.  once I've done all the lessons you recommended and perfected them I will reach out to you and see what you may recommend next.  Its a pity life gets in the way of me being able to practice as much as I'd like, but....all good things come with time....and practice. thanks again. Cath.
