Ive had the same guitar for about 40 years and never even heard of a "professional setup".  Its not a real expensive guitar (it was when I was 20).  It's an Applause by Ovation. And it's all I've ever known. I saw some talk and videos about getting a setup.  My real issue is barring chords.  It's pretty tough and was wondering if the action? was changed if that would help.  Any ideas what is a fair price. And if anyone is in the Springfield, MO area, know a good person to take it to.  Any thoughts?  Thanks, Jerry

Hi there,

Most guitar shops  usually charge around 40-50 for a setup. That usually covers lowering the action, changing strings and adjust the truss rod. Since the guitar is that old however ask them about the frets. If they are sprouting and need replacement that could get expensive. You might want to ask Stephen White ( scroll  down to full access section and look for guitar technician)  and send him some pics and see if that needs to be done. If just a basic setup is all you need then put some light gauge strings on them. All that should help with barre chords.

Big fan of " Bubbles" by the way. That actor is one hell of a guitar player as well.

Thanks, Moe's. Think I'll give lighter strings a try first. What gauge would you recommend?

10's are good. Usually they would do this along with the setup. A forty year old guitar could have some other issues so maybe take it to a local guitar center and have them take a look. Good luck.
