[p]Either is fine when you are just getting started on a new concept like this. Any way you can get the right notes happening at the right time is fine.

Eventually you want to work on being able to use both downstrokes & upstrokes, and combining them into alternate picking. You will want more options to play any given musical line you come across in the future. So learning, practicing, developing your picking skills will gradually make your playing more musical.
