I've just bought a new Epiphone Casino and I'm having serious tuning stability issues. The G string is the worst, anything other than the slightest bend will knock it out - not a little flat, but jarringly flat - while overall tuning is unstable.

Generally, strings are more likely to be flat than sharp, but I'm lucky if I can play for longer than 10 minutes without it sliding out tune.

I've only had it since last Thursday, so it probably needs a set-up at the very least (the action is a mile-high and the fretboard needs oiling etc) but has anyone else had this sort of experience with Casinos? Should I be concerned that this is going to be an ongoing issue, because my Snark is threatening to go on strike from overuse.

I should add that also I have a 1990s Japanese Squier Strat, which while it's not perfect, can at least be relied on to hold its tuning even with some aggressive string bending.

Hi Craig,

I'd drop a line to Stephen in the Ask a Guitar Tech (https://www.guitartricks.com/forum/threads.php?f=30) forum, he knows his stuff.

Cheers,

Gordon

sounds like a typical epiphone/gibson to me, all the ones i have owned have had issues with the g string, re-cutting the nut normally helps.

In the end, I took it to a local luthier who did a set-up and replaced the nut. This sort of worked, but there were subsequent issues with loose frets and I had to have the neck re-adjusted as I was getting 'dead' spots on the top and bottom strings. As it stands, it seems to have settled down, but Epi's QC does seem a little wanting.

I've kind of given up, tbh. After the neck adjustment, it seemed to do the trick, but I've been doing GT's solo boot camp for the past month, which involves a lot of full bends, and I was just permanently retuning the G and B strings. In the end, I just used my old Squier Strat.

In the end, I'm not sure if it's Epi's QC or if it's just the wrong type of guitar for me, but I really don't feel very 'bonded' with it. It's funny, because it looks beautiful and sounds great, when in tune at least, but I don't find myself reaching to it the way I do for my Strat. I'm seriously considering trading it in for a string-through Tele, which is what I'd had in my head prior to watching Get Back, bloody Lennon with his cool stripped down Casino. I wonder if he was permanently retuning it too...

Decided to move the Casino on to someone with more patience. Have replaced it with a Player Tele special edition in candy apple red with '51 pickups and a roasted neck. Already feeling a lot more comfortable and attached to it.

While Epiphone Casino is generally known for its quality, it's important to remember that individual guitars can sometimes have specific issues. However, addressing the Get a Professional Setup factors will greatly improve the stability of your instrument's tuning.

New strings need some time to settle in. Make sure you've stretched the strings properly after putting them on. Pull them gently away from the fretboard to help them settle.
