Multi Effects Vs Individual Pedals

Evening all,

im just canvassing option following the release of the new Boss GX-100.

Pros and cons of multi effects vs individual pedals........go!

I think YouTube videos are the place to look for pros and cons on either.

Personally, I prefer individual pedals, which can become expensive, but I doubt any multi effect can come close to something like a Strymon Big Sky for choice of reverbs or a Sunset for overdrive options.

Also, if an individual pedal breaks, you still have the others to use, but if you rely on a multi-effect pedal and that breaks in a live situation, then you're pretty much stuffed.

I suppose the answer has to be "it depends on what you need or want from effects".

The general principle is to use the right tool for the job. So the question becomes what are your musical goals? What are you going to use effects for?

If you only plan on playing music with a few basic timbres like clean, overdrive & an occasional modulation texture (chorus, flanger, etc.), then pedals might be more practical.

If you are considering an expensive comprehensive unit like that Boss, part of the equation becomes how much time do you want to invest in scrolling through menus, options & settings in order to get something you can use to play music?

I've performed, recorded & experiemented with a variety of multi-effects processors, floor units & rack unit. Nowdays there are software options that can do it all.

The most useful multieffects pedal I've ever had & still use is a Zoom MS-50G

It takes up the space of a pedal, but contains dozens of the most practical modulation, texture, delay, etc. device I use on a regular basis. It's also got a great tuner fuction. So it goes at the end of the signal chain after an overdrive & optional wah pedal. Simple & practical.
