Help with alternate/sweep picking

Im not sure what its called, you alternate with up and down strokes. Well to get to my question, what are some good excercises to use incorperate string skipping into the alternate picking? i can go fast on one string but when ever i switch strings it takes a bit. So if you would please give me some practice excercises, thanx!
