Just wondering why there are hardly ever any new blues songs posted. Is there nothing being requested. I'm mainly talking about older stuff before the lines really became blurred. Is there just no interest in it?

Hi Steve,

The way I see it is that Guitar Tricks is a teaching site and, as such, does an excellent job of teaching a wide variety of playing styles.

In the 'Blues' sections there is also a wide variety of blues styles covered that should give most students sufficient knowledge to play the blues in the most popular styles.

If you want more examples, there is a huge amount available on the web. One of my favourite sites is 'https://chordify.net/. You type in the song you want to hear and play and it comes up with a selection of the song from Youtube and also gives you the chords to play. You can listen to the performance and follow the chords at the same time. Worth checking out I think.

All in all, I think GT has you covered pretty well for aspiring blues players and although it would be nice to see some new blues songs I think GT has you covered pretty well.

Kind regards

Joe

Joe,

With kindest regards to you, I think you are missing Steve's point. Guitar Tricks is a teaching site and does an excellent point of teaching a wide variety of playing styles. My impression of Steve's post did not suggest he was saying otherwise.

He was asking why there are hardly any new blues song lessons, especially "older stuff". If one looks at the most recent 100 songs lessons on Guitar Tricks there are only 3 of what I would consider older blues. Those are one by Freddie King on July 8, one by John Lee Hooker on April 15, and one by Otis Redding last year in June. So clearly only 3% of new song lessons are older blues. If one looks at all song lessons labelled as “blues” during this same time period there were only 7, so 7%. Those included lessons by artists such as SRV, the Stones and John Mayall.

There were, I think undeniably, very few new blues song lessons added over the roughly last year and a half when compared to other genres.

To suggest that Steve go elsewhere completely ignores the intent of his post. Of course, he can go to the site you suggested or YouTube. But he would like to see more older blues songs lessons here. I tend to agree.

When it comes to older blues song lessons GT does not have “you covered pretty well”.

Maybe there just isn't enough of us requesting the old blues song through the song requests section of the forum, I know it takes a long time for any successful request to finally make it onto the site but if we keep putting those requests in hopefully we'll see results.

There must be one that made it from a request to a lesson. But I don't know of any.

See this thread, especially post #10, ihttps://https://www.guitartricks.com/forum/thread.php?f=58&t=46110&pg=1www.guitartricks.com/forum/thread.php?f=58&t=46110&pg=1sn't

Note that the Song Request Forum itself has gone away.

Well there is plenty of guitar here for me to learn and lately i use alot of Christopher Schlegel's blues series lessons. Then i'll go back to some songs, mostly blues. I am working in that four guitar range for whatever thats worth though. But i think the last thing i requested was some songs by J.J.Cale. So there you go, i just don't see much new in the way of any blues. But it's all good i ain't hatin', I love Guitar Tricks and the quality lessons they provide Thanks for the chat...Cheers, I'm out!

Try this one; https://www.guitartricks.com/forum/thread.php?f=58&t=46110

While you're at it, it's post # 2 (not # 10) that I wanted to point out.

Sorry 'bout that.

Thanks for posting the correct link John, I must admit that the only request I have made that actually made it onto the site was when the Jimi Hendrix songs were removed I requested Hey Joe's as it was written by Billy Roberts so the licence shouldn't be so difficult to obtain but everyone knows Jimi's version so it would be a happy middle ground but apart from that no other requests I've made have been successful so far.

I would definitely like to see more country blues lessons. For example, Lighning' Hopkins, Big Bill broonzy and Skip James. I've been doing Christopher's blues course here on GT but it's geared more towards electric blues. There's nothing wrong with that, but it would be nice to see more of the origins.

Thanks for checking out my lessons! My blues orchestration tutorials are closer to that old style of blues. And they can be done on acoustic as easily as electric. In fact I use my semi-hollow body guitar with a clean tone to capture that older sound.

Blues Orchestration Series 6

This is exactly the sort of material that works well on solo acoustic guitar. It will definitely give the skills & ideas to tackle those older blues styles. Give it a try!
