Gibson Les Paul

Got my Gibson Les Paul Standard Double CutAway Plus today! It rocks!

I just need to re-string it to .10 gauge (my strat is at .12 gauge, the LP came with .09 gauge, and i plan on playing with .10 gauge from now on, so i can play 6 hours straight, like i could when i first had .10's on my strat).

also, whats weird was i didnt see a truss rod thingy...?

what are the pros and cons with string gauge. I have a fender factory setup, dont know the gauge but its factory. Would would happen if i got a less guage? i know it would be easier on the fingers, but what about the sound? Is there an optimal guage for that fat sound you get from les pauls?

ha. no, factory setup is usually pretty close to the lowest gauge you can get, and if thats tough on your fingers, try a set of .12 gauge.

When i refer to different gauges (.11, .10, .09, .12, etc, im referring to the High E string's Gauge, and usually the gauge set)

some people use pretty heavy lower 4 strings, and pretty light high 2 strings, (B and E). there are endless possibilities, some people like .09', some people like .11 or 12 or whatever they might choose. I just need a .10 because 9's feel way too light. going from 12's to 9's is a huge weird step.

You get better clean tone with heavier strings. The guitar works more like an acoustic, with better sustain, and you can hear the contribution made by the materials and construction of the guitar. Light strings work best with high gain, heavy distortion settings. They sound 'thin' on clean settings, but that keeps your sound from getting muddy when you're using a lot of gain. Light strings may be less stressful to your fretting hand, but they require a very delicate touch with your picking hand. For me, anything lighter than .011 for the high E feels like spider webs. I started out on acoustic guitars, and I still prefer that kind of response to my touch.

I totally agree, and i love playing clean (i love distortion too, but mostly i stay away from heavy distortion, especially since i play a FDR '65) , but i decided to stay at 10-46 on my LP, gives it alot of playability and also some sustain.

What's a truss rod thingy? The truss rod adjusting nut is under the cover on the headstock like all Gibsons, and Congrats!, I think the DC is the best solid body Gibson's ever done, I guess an old dinosaur can learn new tricks.....

I had a brain fart while writing it, lol. you can understand that.

i had a feeling it was under there (didnt check). Also, the DC + is a solid body, but it weighs a remarkably 4 or 5 pounds (or it seems; very light for an LP). Its very light, due to a chambered mahogony back, and wow can it sing! The cleans are cleaner than normal LP's, and if you put a mild distortion on, you can get the phattest tone, ah man!

not very expensive either, like i said, i got mine for $1090.

If an old reprobate like me was to take up praying on your behalf, the results might be, ah, unpredictable? :)

I do wish you well, though; after driving all the way across the continent, you need a good break. :D
