First of all Mike, you are an awesome instructor. Thank you for that. You can teach an old dog new tricks (no pun intended here).

In the Tears for Fears song, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, did you have to change tuning or pitch? When you play to the recording you are spot on, when I am playing to the song in std 440 the tuning seems off to the MP3. This is an MP3 downloaded from Amazon that I am using.

Thanks for all you do

Pat

Hey Pat, thanks for the kind words!

Indeed, the original recording of that song seems to be sped up a touch - enough that it does push it slightly sharp of A440. It's most likely they recorded it at A440 (given the amount of synthesizers used) and then maybe sped up the tape when it was mixed or mastered to give just a little push of energy or brightness --- this was actually a thing that was used occasionally back in the analog days:)

Try to find an mp3 player that lets you tweak the pitch and then play along at standard 440. You'll have to lower the pitch slightly to get it close.

Hope this helps!

Mike

Hi Pat,

You can use a program called Amazing Slow Downer on computer or iPad to change pitch finely or coarsely up or down without changing the tempo. Brilliant, particularly if you're a singer!

Best,
