All,

I was reviewing the scale finder in toolbox and have some questions. Each of the dots on the fret are labeled with a number and some are in the color red. Trying to understand what these mean and how that might help me understand how I need to play these.

Those numbers are scale degrees. The notes that are red are root notes. I discuss them in great depth & detail in these tutorials.

The scale finder has 2 settings to toggle between in using the tool in the lower left corner.

1. Display Scale Degrees

2. Display Notes

Hope that helps. Please ask more if necessary!

Christopher, one more question...As it relates to scales, I’ve spend the last several days practicing and watching others on video who are adept at it. One thing I’m noticing is that it appears those who are really smooth and quick can flatten all four fingers as they go through the progression. I’ve noticed on my hand that my pinky has a tendency to turn toward the other fingers and that is obviously causing a dull or buzzing sound as I’m not hitting it flush. Is that something that will improve with practice? Just curious if your other students have experienced a problem like this. Having a very difficult time stretching across four frets without this occurring.

Thanks!

That's a matter of strength & dexterity. For some students it does self correct after enough repetitious practice. The pinky (and other fingers) gradually get more agile over the course of time.

But for some students it's more difficult to acquire the strength & dexterity necessary to achieve smooth, efficient motion.

The spider exercises Lisa uses can help in some of these cases. And I've created these pinky exercises aimed at correcting that problem. The goal here is to keep practicing basic chords while getting in a pinky workout!

Hope that helps!
