Hi. My name is Joe. I'm 72 years old and live in the county of Essex, England. I have decided to take up a new hobby. In the past I've played bass guitar, tenor sax ,clarinet and flute but that was many years ago.

A few weeks ago I purchased an accoustic guitar just to see if it would work out. It did and now I've just purchased an Epiphone ES-339 and practice amp. Very happy with that. Well, after messing around a bit trying basic chords, scales, picking out some tunes, I decided I really needed a structured approach to learning to play the guitar. So here I am.

I'm still a little apprehensive about what I can achieve but, hey, what have I got to lose,eh?

I'm looking forward to some happy times learning to play this instrument for myself and the family.

So, off I jolly well go!

Joe, I'm 59 and taking up guitar since taking lessons as a teenager. Having to learn all over again and whilel not easy with these old hands of mine, I'm determined to give it my best shot.

Welcome to GT, and I know you will enjoy the step by step approach here as I do.

'My attitude is the same as yours, what do we have to lose. My fingers are sore, but I'm pushing through as best I can! Here's to older adults out there who want to learn how to play this beautiful instrument and not giving up!

Thank you for your encouraging replies. That's nice.

At first I was jumping all over YouTube trying to find out stuff but it became very frustrating. There was no continuity and my head was exploding with too much fragmented information. I did get some very useful info on setting up the guitar which I have put to good use. Now my guitar, (Epiphone ES-339 Sunburst) is set up beautifully.

Now I've started this course I have continuity, brilliant instruction and motivation. The best move I've made so far.

Yep, it's exciting,it keeps the brain active, (important at my age) and it's great fun.

Thanks again for your comments.

Joe

Hi Joe,

I've found the structured learning here really great. I'd imagine you'll progress quickly due to you previous musical interests and your retired (hopefully) status.

Good luck

You're an inspiration for all, I wish you best of luck. Maybe on day we can jam together. :)

Thanks very much. Due to my previous musical interests I am pretty well up on musical theory and setting up instruments. It's the physical side that I am very rusty with.

To be honest, it still feels as if the guitar is refusing to play ball with me.
