Most Underrated Guitarist?

Who are some of the most underrated guitar players out there?

Wow awesome performance of Prince. That was just a flawless, perfect solo...and great showmanship as always :)
After seeing this I have to vote for Prince too :P

I had a hard time thinking of somebody. I put Alex Lifeson from Rush. I say Alex because he tended to be overshadows by Neil's ridiculous drum skills and Geddy's bass. Since had had to do double duty as a lead and rhythm guitarist, couldn't just let 'er rip and was overshadowed by the hair metal shredders of the 80's. Stuff like "Red Sector A", with its awesome chord and rhythmic work, didn't stand out amongst the shredders of the time.

Somebody posted Mike McCready from Pearl Jam (and Mad Season). After watching a Mad Season live video, I have to agree :-).

He certainly doesn't have the name recognition (among non-guitarists anyway), probably because he was/is more of a session player. I always liked his work with Billy Idol and the instrumental project "Bozzio, Levin, and Stevens". Black Light Syndrome is awesome!!! Not only can he rip it up on electric, he's a terrific Spanish style player.

Interestingly enough, he does lessons at a competing website.

What I want to know is what happened to the guitar when he threw it up in the air as I didn't see anyone get hit by it. :confused:

Wow! This is a tough one because there are so many. I'd have to say Frank Zappa-the man was an incredible guitar player with a million dollar voice. I'm sure that I'll come up with more.

Totally second the Prince nomination. Amazing guitar player! Anyone ever hear of Mike Slamer? Played with an awesome band called City Boy in the 70's, then a band called Streets and then Steelhouse Lane. My #1 all-time favorite- underrated and otherwise.

The first time I heard this song, awesome. Slamer is a great guitar player.

Terry Kath no one comes close when being "under rated" he may bethe best of all time ( rock/ pop)

I guess Mike Slamer would be more in the unrecognized category than the under-rated category. I couldn't figure out how to add sound bites to a post but I would love to have some of my fellow guitar nuts hear some Mike Slamer and get their impressions. His best (?) work was with CITY BOY. Just a few examples of some crazy good guitar work would be "Need A Little Lovin", "Cigarettes", or maybe "Summer In The Schoolyard". I'm sure I've spent hundreds of hours trying to come up with decent renditions of his stuff and still can't get it "right". I know it's asking lot to have you source these songs yourself but if you have a few minutes to burn and wouldn't mind indulging an old fool, I'd really like to hear some feedback. Any advice you might have on how to replicate his signature tones would be very interesting too.

Ian Moss! He is an absolutely amazing Aussie guitarist in the band Cold Chisel. Seriously underrated!
